Treehouse

Ages 4 – 5 / Pre-K & TK

The Treehouse is aimed at preparing children for Kindergarten through a hands-on, play-based approach. Children in this class participate in a daily routine made up of opportunities for exploratory learning, community time, and time spent outdoors. The Treehouse class uses a child-led, project-based approach to explore topics of student interest to evoke inquiry, research, creativity, wonder, and more. This program builds upon the Greenhouse & Sunroom classes and expands those skills. Children are supported through an individualized experience while striving to master social-emotional regulation, foster independence, and build self-confidence for their transition into a new academic setting. Treehouse students leave Oneonta confidently prepared for their next adventure.

Kinder Prep

With a progressive curriculum focused on social-emotional development, children leave the Treehouse ready to tackle the expectations of a new academic journey. Teachers support play while folding in developmentally appropriate opportunities to meet Kindergarten readiness standards by utilizing the skills developed in previous OCNS classrooms.

Project-Based Learning

Treehouse students engage in a child-led, project-based approach using high-interest topics specific to the group of students through inquiry. This play-based, multidisciplinary approach allows students to learn through the arts, the scientific process, literacy, and more. You may see students painting to different types of music to explore how music impacts movement during dance research, or constructing a full dog habitat for a dog project, or drawing/labeling observations as they observe a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly for an insect unit.

Fluid Structure

Students move through their day feeling confident in knowing they are the guides of their education. From explorations, to play in the yards, and reflective community time, students take ownership of their roles and can expect that their interests will always be met with encouragement while maintaining a comfortable routine.

Critical Thinking

Children are supported through inquisition and exploration. We encourage students to learn and grow from the process rather than focusing on a singular result or product. Through this journey the development of a broader lens for learning emerges.

A broader lens for learning

Critical thinking is developed at an early age by allowing children to imagine, attempt, and ask questions that promote dialogue. We believe that dialogue elicits large scale learning when children are in a space and community that organically encourages that inquisition. The Treehouse promotes this by utilizing open ended explorations, holding space for students to share personal stories, and invitations to participate in small group experiences that promote collaboration. In this space students are demonstrating their mastery through autonomous presentation of skills gained in previous years. Aptly named, the Treehouse sits above the other classrooms, upstairs. It is a space where students navigate much more independently and can often be seen collaborating in small groups with their friends.
